Budget delivers $13 million for Boondall station upgrade
Nudgee MP Leanne Linard announced a $13 million upgrade of Boondall train station would be delivered in the Palaszczuk Government’s 2015-16 Queensland Budget.
Ms Linard said that the upgrade was great news for the local community and would significantly improve station facilities and accessibility for Boondall passengers.
“Boondall station sees around 6,400 passenger movements each week and is a key station on the Shorncliffe line, particularly for event goers travelling to or from the Brisbane Entertainment Centre,” Ms Linard said.
“For major events, the station can cater for up to 1,800 passenger movements in just one night.
“While a detailed design and scope has not yet been finalised, I will be ensuring that the final design allows all platforms to be independently accessed without the use of stairs.
“This is a big win for the Boondall community and will significantly improve access to the station for all customers including those with disabilities, elderly, parents with prams, people with injuries or even simply those carrying luggage.”
Treasurer Curtis Pitt said his 2015-16 Budget dedicates $212 million to upgrading key South East Queensland train stations over the next five years.
“As South East Queensland’s population continues to grow, the Palaszczuk Government is committed to improving the accessibility of city network train stations to ensure all passengers can travel safely and easily,” Mr Pitt said.
Ms Linard said the Boondall Station upgrade was expected to support around 250 jobs in industries such as carpentry, tiling, concreting, plumbing and electrical trades, with building materials also to be sourced from local suppliers wherever possible.
“Throughout design and construction, Queensland Rail will work closely with its Accessibility Reference Group and the local community to ensure they are kept well informed and that the project scope directly reflects passengers’ needs,” she said.
“At its heart this is a jobs Budget which will deliver jobs now and create new jobs for the future.
“This Budget invests in initiatives across the breadth and depth of our State to support growth and stimulate new opportunities.”
